I love Halloween. It is perhaps the most empowering holiday of the year. For fun, think of the person you admired most when you were a child. It could be Spiderman (or any other movie character – animated or not). It could be a favorite character in a book, a celebrity, a favorite Aunt or Teacher. Think back to when you were able to complete this sentence: “When I grow up I want to be _______.”

Create a costume for whatever answer popped into your mind. Wear the costume on Halloween and really get into the part. Act as if you were that person. Have fun in that role.

When the evening comes to an end take off the costume. As you put the costume away think of the attributes of the person you embodied over the course of the evening. For example, if Madonna rocked your world when you were little, consider the attributes of confident, authentic, self-assured, talented, adored by many, unique, strong, comfortable in her own skin, controversial – or whatever it was about her that impressed you as a child. Whatever attributes you identify as meaningful, hold onto them as you show up expressing those attributes the next day and every day after that.

The truth is, whomever you aspired to be when you were little is a reflection of who you are. You love a reflection of you! If there are parts of you that you do not like know this is your conditioned self, your nurture not your nature. This is the egoic coping mechanism and what I playfully call the Inner Critic, that you invented to stay safe and loved in your formative years.

Acknowledge, embrace and honor the attributes that make your heart sing and are your birthright. Show up in your life as the person you aspired to be. Soon the role won’t feel like a costume as you become comfortable in your own skin!

The 2009 Pumpkinland Festival at Heaven Hill Farm in Vernon, New Jersey offers a variety of country-style family entertainment for festival goers of all ages every Saturday and Sunday from September 19- October 25 including Monday, Columbus Day.

The festival will kick off with loads of affordable family entertainment. Enjoy the scenic countryside on an old-fashioned hayride. Stroll through our pumpkin patches bursting with pumpkins of all shapes and sizes and find that perfect one to take home to carve. Pick a winner of a pig and cheer it on as it races to the finish line of the “Pigtuckey Derby.”

“We’ve put our focus on providing the best family entertainment of the fall season offering it all for the price of admission to the festival,” says Martin Theobald, Heaven Hill Farm owner. Theobald stresses that admission prices to Pumpkinland will remain at last year’s level at only $6 general admission, and FREE for children ages 3 and under.

Children of all ages will love feeding the farm animals at the petting zoo and learning the work habits of bees with an up close look inside their hives. Those willing to get lost in the twisted paths through the hay maze and hay crawl may find themselves right on top of Hay Mountain. For the more adventurous, the corn maze tempts the brave hearted to escape out of 10 acres of 8 foot tall Jersey corn stalks and the Boo Barn offers animated entertainment for the young and young-at-heart.

Other not-to-miss highlights available in addition to admission to Pumpkinland include designing a customized sand art masterpiece and choosing your very own personalized “tattoo” at the face painting booth. Maximize your fun by capturing chills and thrills when you spin, speed and soar on classic amusement park rides. Stay for bone chilling terror as you venture along our trails of fear on the Haunted Acres Hayride every Friday and Saturday through October 30 from 7-10 p.m.

Festival goers need not deny their appetite for true festival food. All of the old favorites like corn dogs, sausage & peppers, French fries, ice cream, funnel cakes, cider, donuts and bakery treats, including our very own fresh baked pies, are available on site and for the drive home. New this year, customers can surely satisfy their sweet-tooth craving with deep-fried cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookies.

Established in 1983, Heaven Hill Farm is a 150 acre working farm and full service garden center offering annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, gardening supplies, seasonal produce, patio and pool furniture, sheds and giftware. In addition to the “PumpkinLand” Festival, Heaven Hill is host to yearly events including, Haunted Acres Hayride, Easter Egg Hunts, Seasonal Tent Sales and Educational School Tours.

2009 seams to be the most innovative year for the petticoat to date!

The petticoat isn’t just an “accessory” anymore, but an actual “costume”! We used to buy the solid white petticoat that no one really saw unless it showed a little trim under your Halloween costume. We are used to seeing these amazing petticoat pictures with a fluffy look as beautiful as a cloud, but then when you received the package the petticoat was crumpled up, needed to be steamed, and even then it would not look that good. No one really cared since its only purpose was to make the skirt of your Halloween costume look puffy and show a little lace trim.

Today it is a totally different story!  Petticoats come in many different colors, shapes, lengths and even qualities. It is not an accessory any more but more the “whole” costume. It gets accessorized and matched up with shoes, hats, stockings and other accessories to create your fabulous costume. Petticoats have been seen in music videos, magazines, on concert stages and TV shows all over the world.

The petticoat has become a star.

2009 IS the year of the Petticoat. It comes in many different solid colors with matching lace trim, colored silk trim, double or tripled layered, see-through, sheer, polka dotted, glitter finished, sequenced, striped and even decorated with stars! In addition, besides the many color variations, it is no longer offered in only two lengths. Petticoats are offered in variety of lengths just right for everyone. The new lengths work for the more modest person to the person who’s not very shy at all! Perfect for the not so tall, the very tall and even Petticoats it in plus size.

Once I had a costumer call me and complain that our petticoats were too sheer for her daughter.  Instead of telling her that a petticoat is supposed to be under a non-sheer skirt and not the actual “skirt”, I simply told her to buy two and layer them. She loved the idea and thanked me. If you cannot find your correct “sheerness” or your perfect “puffy” look you just simply double up your petticoat. And if you are really daring, buy two colors and double them up or even a shorter petticoat layered on top of a longer one. Do it!

The 2009 is the year of the petticoat! If you want to save money and have a “non-recession” Halloween look, play with the many petticoat variations and looks you can achieve. You will have that original Halloween Costume you were looking for and even an accessory that you can use all year long.
