Backup software very poor.

I purchased this a month ago it use to backup my two computers. AfterI had to reformat my hard disk today I found out that I cannot just restore my files. All I can do is click and drag the files. A Google search will turn up many people unhappy about this. This was the response of a Seagate forum moderator to a similar complaint.
"I asked one of our techs, and he said that the Manager restore function isn't that strong anyway, really. Bottom line - this drive is not marketed as nor was it conceived of as a product with a high-tech, super-strong backup program. It's a storage facility, and that's it.
So, to restore, drag and drop, copy and paste, etc...
I hope that helps. For full, disaster-recovery backups of your system, ie, your entire C: drive, programs, operating system, settings, registry, all that stuff, use DiscWizard's image backup. It is also free. I know that doesn't help at this precise moment, but I mean for future reference."
You have been warned. |
Crash and lost...

HORRIBLE! After 6 months, I began to have trouble, I was using this as my Time Machine backup -- and Time Machine said the device was becoming unstable. Went into the Mac store to see what was happening, if it was my computer or the device, the device was making noises and I was told this company has become undependable. They used to make good drives, but S they got bigger, quality went down. If I want to salvage the data I have to pay a small fortune. MAJOR waste of money.

It sat next to my pc for 4 weeks. Then started giving windows delay write errors. Trying to get help from the seagate web site is impossible. I see there are numerous reports on the web concerning failures of this device. Avoid it.
my XP computer won't detect it. Tried on 4 computers.

I have a same brand 320GB and have the best experience with it. This one has problems. Hate wasting time on new equipment sending back. I went thru the convoluted many steps on seagate website troubleshooter with examples like -, check that it's plugged in kind of bs. just couldn't get it to work. will see if i can get i.t. help desk support with it to try again before sending back.
Broke after 2 months.

I had this item for two months and it broke. I made the mistake of importing & exporting simultaneously and stopped working within seconds. Now there's a loud clicking noise inside. I looked at the instruction manual to see whether simultaneous importing/exporting is discouraged and didn't find any information about that. I called SeaGate and found out it costs a minimum of $700 for them to extract the data on the HD, but could cost up to $1200. The only positive thing is that this item is insured until 2015 and you can send it to SeaGate for a new one. However, they will not extract the data for you, just send you a new device (assuming you didn't open it to extract the data yourself). This might have been a lemon, but I advise people not to import/export simultaneously in order to reduce chances that the HD will break.
